The cause of a fire that destroyed a marina building with hundreds of boats might never be known because of the extensive damage, an official said.
The building’s roof and sides collapsed Dec. 4 at Toledo Beach Marina in Monroe County in southeastern Michigan. An estimated 200 boats were stored inside near Lake Erie.
State police will investigate. No injuries were reported. At least 14 area fire departments responded.
“I don’t think they’re ever going to find a cause, just because of the amount of damage that was done,” said Randy Howe, the fire chief in LaSalle Township.
“Things had to be torn apart to actually take care of the fire. There’s no probable cause at this time, and I’d be surprised if they even found one,” Howe told the Monroe News.
The 420-slip marina is in LaSalle Township, a few miles south of Monroe and just north of the Ohio border.
