Chicago has announced $33 million in security upgrades on the Chicago Transit Authority system funded by a ride-hailing service fee.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office says a new program 鈥� dubbed “Safe and Secure” 鈥� will upgrade 3,800 older-model system cameras to high-definition. It’ll also add 1,000 new cameras.
Among the other security improvements will be better lighting at all 146 CTA stations. New cameras will also be installed at more than 100 CTA bus-turnaround locations.
Emanuel and CTA President Dorval R. Carter Jr. announced the plans this week. Emanuel hailed the funding mechanism. He says Chicago is “the first city in the nation to create a ride-hailing fee dedicated to transit.”
Carter added that “ensuring every CTA customer and employee is safe” is a top priority.
