A federal lawsuit has been filed by five former high school football players and two parents against various employees of a western Ohio school district.
The Lima News reported the suit alleges that two coaches at St. Marys Memorial High School subjected the players to regular and repeated harassment, intimidation and humiliation.
The lawsuit also claims that the coaches used derogatory and demeaning terms when referring to players and pressured them to play while injured.
The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages as well as a requirement that the school board adopt harassment policies with guidance from the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.
Superintendent Shawn Brown issued a statement saying the complaint is completely without merit.
School board president Karl Dammeyer declined to comment.
