Authorities say the Detroit fire department responded to a string of 17 suspected arson fires that burned over a roughly 12-hour period.

Chief of Arson Patrick McNulty tells the Detroit Free Press the first fire was reported about 8 p.m. Monday and fires burned mix of occupied and vacant homes.

No injuries were reported. He says most were on the city’s east side. WWJ-AM, which earlier reported word of multiple fires, says investigators are seeking tips from the public.

McNulty says one fire burned three houses, including one that collapsed. He says there were reports of people squatting in the house.

Monday was the night of the city’s annual fireworks display over the Detroit River and McNulty says it typically is a busy night for firefighters.
