A township near Flint, Mich., is appealing a U.S. Postal Service decision to deny its request for a mailing address distinct from the troubled city.
The Flint Journal reports that Grand Blanc Township officials and business boosters filed an appeal that includes more than 200 letters of support. Township supervisor Micki Hoffman says businesses pay more for insurance because of the Flint mailing address.
The 48507 ZIP code includes parts of several communities but all mail sent within it is labeled Flint. The industrial city has long struggled with high rates of crime and poverty, while the city and township of Grand Blanc are more affluent.
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling says it makes sense for mailing addresses to match municipalities.
