Lake Delhi, Iowa, community leaders say they’re shocked and disappointed over Gov. Terry Branstad’s veto of a $5 million assistance package after flood waters destroyed the dam and recreational lake on the Maquoketa River.
Branstad stripped the $5 million the Iowa Legislature earmarked for rebuilding Lake Delhi and its dam earlier this week. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Branstad also used his line-item veto to eliminate a $10 million increase for the Community Attraction and Tourism program.
Branstad says the move provides additional time to consider the best use of those funds in the future.
State Sen. Tom Hancock of Epworth says Branstad’s veto of the funds is mind-boggling because the money would come from gaming revenue instead of from taxpayers.
