Taxpayers living in the 35 Missouri counties approved for federal flood disaster assistance have until May 19 to file and pay taxes.
The IRS and Missouri Department of Revenue consider taxpayers who live in, have businesses in, or employ tax preparers in the affected counties eligible for the relief. Tax agencies say the automatic extension was allowed to give residents time to cope with flood issues.
Missouri taxpayers who file after the deadline must note their eligibility for the extension by including the phrase “Missouri Severe Storms and Flooding” at the top of their tax forms.
Springfield accountant Gary Garwitz said that even though the extensions are automatic, taxpayers should formally notify the IRS of their eligibility.
