President Donald Trump has approved a disaster declaration for upstate New York counties hit by severe flash flooding in August.
The declaration signed Monday by the Republican will allow the counties to apply for federal financial assistance to cover the money spent on cleanup and recovery efforts.
Flash flooding caused by heavy rains Aug. 14-15 led to an estimated $36 million in damage to infrastructure, homes and business in the Finger Lakes region and Southern Tier.
The affected counties include Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Delaware, Schuyler, Seneca and Tioga.
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said Tuesday the federal aid would provide a “vitally needed shot in the arm” for communities hit by devastating flooding.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will next review the damage and determine what qualifies for reimbursement.
