Boston transit officials are telling passengers to keep their hoverboards at home.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority announced that effective immediately, the devices will no longer be allowed in stations or on any vehicle including buses, trolleys, commuter trains and commuter boats. No exceptions will be made to the ban.
The Boston-area transit agency said in a statement that it conducted an assessment of hoverboards and determined them to be a safety risk. The devices have been linked to fires around the country.
The T noted it already has rules in place prohibiting items that are potentially explosive or inflammable.
Officials pointed to several other U.S. transit systems, including New York and Chicago, which have banned hoverboards.
Dozens of airlines have also banned the devices from being carried on planes.
