The first installment of about $3.8 billion in federal Superstorm Sandy aid for New York’s Metropolitan Transit Authority has been allocated to repair flooded tunnels and other infrastructure that was damaged by the 2012 storm.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said on Jan. 24 the agency is receiving about $880 million. About $615 million of that money will be given to New York City Transit to repair underwater tunnels, subway stations and other facilities.
That includes the Montague tunnel, which is in the middle of a 14-month shutdown while workers repair extensive water damage. The tunnel carries thousands of commuters between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The funding will also repair communication signals, repair stations for rails and buses and damage to the Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Railroad.
