2,700 New Jersey Homeowners Getting Money to Raise Houses

About 2,700 New Jersey homeowners will get federal grants to elevate homes damaged by Superstorm Sandy.

Gov. Chris Christie announced the grant program Monday in a visit to a Brick Township neighborhood where all the homes are on lagoon

Homeowners will be able to get up to $30,000 each. Recipients will be chosen based on how much damage they received in Sandy, along with other factors.

Experts have said that’s enough to elevate some smaller homes, but many homes could be more costly to elevate.

The grants are the latest of several federal grants to be announced in New Jersey. The most generous is providing up to $150,000 to help rebuild homes. Those funds can also be used to raise homes to higher levels.

What is the incentive not to move away from the flood areas then? Give them government money to stay and then give them more government money to fix again?
