The Suffolk County district attorney’s office has issued subpoenas to three Long Island towns as it investigates how local governments spent tens of millions of taxpayers’ money on Sandy cleanup.
According to Newsday, municipal officials in Brookhaven, Islip and Babylon confirmed they were issued the grand jury subpoenas. They said they were cooperating with the investigation.
As of last week, federal records show that municipalities across Long Island had undertaken projects totaling $247.5 million, for which $178.1 million has been disbursed by FEMA.
The Nassau County district attorney’s office also is investigating how county officials entered into emergency contracts with companies doing storm cleanup.
