The District of Columbia Attorney General’s Office has filed lawsuits against 13 current or former city employees accused of collecting unemployment benefits while holding government jobs.
The lawsuits seek to recover amounts ranging from $4,300 to nearly $14,000. Some of the employees being sued have already been fired.
The scheme was first revealed earlier this year, and about 130 employees were implicated, a number that has since grown. District officials said in April that 61 employees had been fired.
The city’s Department of Employment Services continues to investigate the possible fraud, and some cases could be referred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for criminal prosecution.
The attorney general’s office noted in a statement last Thursday that employees can agree to pay the money back and avert potential lawsuits.
