Cardinal Timothy Dolan is planning a speech on the recent controversy involving contraceptive coverage in health insurance plans.
The spiritual leader of the Archdiocese of New York plans to address the issue this coming weekend at a conference on Long Island.
Newsday reports Dolan, who became a cardinal Feb. 18, will be keynote speaker Saturday at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville. He will speak at a convocation addressing critical issues affecting Catholic school teaching.
Dolan will discuss a U.S. Health and Human Services regulation on providing free contraceptive services to employees of religiously affiliated institutions such as hospitals, charities and colleges.
Dolan and other Catholic and conservative leaders say the plan violates religious freedom.
Proponents say the plan is a breakthrough for women’s rights.
