A New York City councilman is introducing legislation that would require bike license plates for messengers and food delivery people.
The Daily News reports that the bill would require businesses that hire cyclists to obtain license plates for each worker’s bike and to show proof of insurance.
The bill is being proposed by Councilman David Greenfield of Brooklyn. He says license plates would help to quickly identify those cyclists who break traffic rules.
Businesses that fail to get license plates for their employees would face a $1,000 fine.
Messengers and restaurant owners told the News that the legislation would make it that much harder for them to make a living in the city.
The New York State Restaurant Association said it already has insurance to cover bike accidents.
