Three Virginia lawmakers are asking lenders to help homeowners whose homes were built with suspect drywall imported from China.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner and Congressmen Bobby Scott and Glenn Nye Reps issued their appeal Monday during a tour of three such homes in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Inez Tenenbaum also participated in the tour.

The commission is investigating complaints from homeowners who say the drywall is making them sick and corroding wiring throughout their homes.

Warner says some homes are uninhabitable but families still have to pay the mortgages. He says lawmakers are trying to see if lenders will give homeowners “some forbearance from the mortgage payments.”
