Scooter-owners who feared getting a $65 ticket for parking on Boston’s sidewalks are getting a break.

A new law taking effect Aug. 1 that requires “limited use” license plates and insurance for scooters capable of reaching speeds up to 40 miles per hour would have made sidewalk parking illegal and subject to ticketing.

But Boston’s top parking official tells The Boston Globethat little should change next month.

Transportation Commissioner Thomas Tinlin says scooters parked on sidewalks will not get a ticket unless they are causing an obstruction or blocking handicapped access.

Tinlin says the city is trying to apply common sense to the law.
