Court records show that feuding emergency workers in Smithsburg, Maryland, have settled a wrongful death lawsuit.
An attorney for Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services said Monday the case has been settled by mutual agreement. The lawyer, Thomas McCarron, declined to discuss terms of the deal.
The lawsuit was filed by survivors of volunteer firefighter Christina Hess. She and her unborn child died in 2003 from pregnancy complications while the former chief of the ambulance company mocked the call for help and belittled the fire company in a tape-recorded conversation with a dispatcher.
The plaintiffs alleged that ill will toward the fire company caused EMS workers to respond too slowly to the emergency.
The case would have gone to trial May 26.
