A 60-acre Superfund site in Old Bridge, New Jersey is set for cleanup after more than two dozen companies reached an agreement with the state to cover the cost.
Under the settlement announced Wednesday, about $20 million that 31 companies put into an escrow account will be used for remediation work at the Global Landfill, which is near Cheesequake State Park.
The deal also calls for those companies to pay an additional $2 million to the state for monitoring costs.
For many years, the landfill was a dumping ground for municipal, commercial and industrial waste, including asbestos. Plans have been in the works to clean up the area since 1991.
