Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran Jr., announced the filing of criminal insurance fraud charges against Lewis Mulitz, president of PICO Industries of Baltimore. In a three count criminal indictment filed in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City, Mulitz was charged with insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit felony theft.
The charges allege that in May of 1995, Mulitz conspired with others to file and did file a fraudulent application for Workers Compensation Insurance with the Injured Workers Insurance Fund. If convicted of felony insurance fraud or conspiracy, Mulitz could be sentenced to serve 15 years in prison on each count.
The indictment follows a joint investigation conducted by the state Office of the Attorney General, the Insurance Fraud Division of the Maryland Insurance Administration and the Maryland State Police. A criminal indictment is merely an accusation of wrongdoing, and every individual is presumed innocent until the charges are proven by the State. No trial date has been set.
