California Governor Gray Davis signed two measures designed to study the effects of mold. SB 732, sponsored by Senator Deborah Ortiz (D-Sacramento), requires the California Department of Health Services (DHS) to convene a task force that will examine whether standards can reasonably be established for exposure to mold inside indoor environments. If there is not enough scientific evidence to support regulations, the task force will develop guidelines and recommendations for appropriate levels of mold in residential and commercial properties. The task force will also review establishing standards for the cleanup and remediation of mold. Davis also signed AB 284, sponsored by Assemblywoman Hannah Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara). This measure requires the California Research Bureau (CRB) to conduct a study and to report its findings on mold in indoor environments to the DHS and the Legislature by Jan. 1, 2003.
