Estimated damage caused to a D.C. school by a roofing crew’s improper use of a blow torch. The school — which happened to be closed that day — sustained serious smoke and water damage and students are being relocated to another school in the District until repairs can be completed.

$120 Million

Four insurers have agreed to pay $120 million in excess workers’ compensation surcharges to New York State, according to the attorney general’s office. The companies — ACE, Zurich, Pennsylvania Manufacturers and CNA — collected too much in surcharges on premiums. In 2000, the state Workers’ Compensation Board changed the way it calculates the annual fees it charges workers’ comp insurers — charges the insurers passed along to policyholders — which resulted in some insurers underpaying.
