Paul Franklin Ostrove, the Hermosa Beach resident who crash-landed his plane at Daniel Webster Junior High School in Los Angeles on Aug. 16, 1998, has been convicted and sentenced to five years of felony probation and ordered to pay more than $200,000 in restitution and fines.
At the time of the crash landing (which was due to lack of fuel), the 35-year-old man did not meet Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot license requirements. The insurance policy on the aircraft specifically indicated that coverage was dependent upon all pilots meeting FAA certification. Ostrove submitted fraudulent documents under penalty of perjury to protect his pilot’s certificate and be covered under the policy.
