Just as the hallowed New York Yankees baseball team heads into the World Series, concerns about the cement used to construct portions of the club’s newly built $1.5 billion home field are drawing scrutiny from city officials.
Large cracks have begun to appear in the ramps at the new stadium, although New York City Buildings Department engineers say the cracks do not affect their structural stability. A team spokeswoman says the cracks are a cosmetic issue.
The inquiry came after the owners of a company involved in designing the concrete mix were accused of either faking or failing to perform some required tests.
Thousands of spectators use the ramps to get to the stadium’s upper tiers.
