One of the three Democrats vying for the party’s nomination for the Delaware insurance commissioner post formally launched her campaign with just three weeks before the Sept. 9 primary.
Karen Weldin Stewart promised to push for legislation that would prohibit insurance company executives and insurance company PACs from contributing to the insurance commissioner candidates.
Weldin Stewart, Gene Reed and Thomas Savage are the candidates running in the primary. Incumbent Matt Denn is running for lieutenant governor.
Reed, the leading candidate in the race for the Democratic Party’s nomination, is defending himself from attacks from his rivals about his campaign contributions.
Candidates Tom Savage and Weldin Stewart have alleged that Reed has taken contributions from people with business before the insurance commissioner.
Reed denied the allegation and countered that his campaign contributors gave him money because of his experience, his integrity and his track record.
Reed is the party’s endorsed candidate but is facing Savage and Weldin Stewart in the Sept. 9 primary.
